Obituary:

Lowell J. Whelan “Red” 81, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away on, May 13, 2012, surrounded by his family and friends. Red was born in Camden Point, MO, on September 24th, 1931.

He grew up in Tracy, MO, and worked on his family’s tobacco farm until his late teens when he was old enough to serve for his country. He enlisted in the Army in 1948. He was active for two tours of duty helping to relocate displaced people after World War II and later served in the Korean War where he earned a pilots license. Red returned home and worked for General Motors and the railroad.

In 1969, he finally planted some roots and landed at Philadelphia Quartz in Kansas City, Ks. Red was a hard-working, humble man who proudly worked at PQ for 28 years as the Parts Procurement Manager. Red was proud of the work that he did at PQ and he proudly hung a picture of the original Kansas City plant, circa 1930’s, on his wall until his death.

In 1972, he married the love of his life, Gayle Jacobson. They were married for 34 years until her death in 2006. Red quietly cared for his family, pets, and others in need with little regard for himself. He was always the first person to offer a helping hand and the last one in line at the dinner table to fill his plate. Red loved baseball, fishing, and spirited exchanges of banter with the boys.

Red is survived by his 2 sisters; Jean Bright & Joyce Garner, 5 children, Bill Whelan, Larry (Bev) Jacobson, David Jacobson, Deborah (Gary) Meisenbach, and Jeff (Esmeralda) Jacobson; 12 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren.

What can i say about my sweet little uncle Red? He was such a good uncle to me. He came to my rescue several times in my life. I loved his sense of humor and his funny little sayings. I am going to miss our daily conversations and his cute little smile. Rest in peace Uncle Red and say hello to my sweet little aunt Gayle for me. I will love you forever.
