Jean L. Nicklin, age 100, passed away on March 7, 2019. He was a life- long resident of Emporia. He was the son of Lloyd and Edna E. (Caspari) Nicklin. He was born on the family farm north of Emporia in the house that his grandfather built. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and Kansas State Teachers College. For a short time before enlisting in the Army Air Corps, he taught high school. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and served in the North African and European theaters of operation during World War II. After returning home, he married Mary Stiffler. He was a letter carrier for the Emporia Post Office for 35 years before retiring. He was a life member of Post 5 of the American Legion and Post 1980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nelda Peckham; wife Mary, son Gary, granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Smith, and his loving companion Elnora French. He is survived by his daughter Candace Smith (Steve); grandsons David Smith (Kat), Paul Smith (Maggie), Andrew Smith; great-granddaughters, Kathryn and Karrin Smith; sister-in-law Shirley (Ken) Moore; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the family of Elnora French, Wanda (Bob) Lane and their children and grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be officiated by Reverend Ron Harris at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Charter Funerals in Emporia, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Emporia.
